Happy Holidays to everyone as the end of 2005 fast approaches. Felicity and I would like to wish each and every one of you a most joyous and prosperous 2006. As we approach 2006, I would like to invite everyone to think of our young men and women serving in the Armed Forces, risking their lives in defense of our nation, and who many will spend this Holiday Season far from their family. Thankfully, they are surrounded with some of the best-trained professionals the world has ever seen. We can only pray they will finish their mission soon and return home. Bill Parker, the web master and creator of SIXTHFLEET.COM web site, organized us authors to support a military member who was deployed in the war zone during this holiday season. Bill’s effort has resonated with us military authors across the board. Our support for our military members should be something we carry with us year round and for American patriots such as our Texas web master it is their support that makes up the will of the American people. A will that is paramount to the warrior overseas, fighting the just fight, knowing that the American people are fully behind him or her.

During my Navy career of 37-years I served with a fellow mustang, Eddie Kanerva. He retired a few years before I did coming up through the ranks to Navy Captain by the time he retired. Eddie led the Navy’s Cryptologic reconnaissance efforts during Desert Storm. He has a son, Scott Kanerva, who is following in his footsteps and who is now deployed in harms way as a member of Operation Iraqi Freedom; 15-years after his father fought in the first Iraqi conflict.

Scott is a Petty Officer in the Navy and recently overcome a life-threatening medical event to return to full and open active duty. An event he could have easily translated into a medical discharge. He has recently deployed to the war zone and will be there for a minimum of 6-months. I would like to encourage you to take a moment of your time and send a flat-rate gift package to Scott filled with things you think you would like to receiver if you were in his place. Scott will pass them out to the others serving with him. You can find out more at http://www.sixthfleet.com The address to mail those items such as Cigars, CD's, DVD's, Games, paperback books, etc is:

My writing continues. DARK PACIFIC has been accepted by Penguin Group and will be released September 2006. PACIFIC THREAT, a story of North Korea-U.S. conflict, will follow on/about March 2007. I am on the last chapter-the wrap up chapter-for PACIFIC THREAT and have really enjoyed writing this one. It is one action-filled, multi plot, multi-story book. I hope you will enjoy DARK PACIFIC when it comes out as well as continue to follow the stories when the next two are released in 2007. I have brought Rear Admiral Richard Holman into the second book as a minor character. Many of you asked if he was ever going to surface again. I kind of like a protagonist who is short, chubby, rude, cigar stomping, and a fighter. More of a Danny DiVito look-alike than a John Wayne wanna-be. As always, I can expect you to let me know your thoughts on the books.

I am writing an OPED column for military dot com. Military dot com is a commercial web site catering to the active duty military member and to those who have served and/or retired from the military. I grew up in the Navy. Joined when I was 18 and retired when I reached 55. Throughout my career, one thing I came to realize is that the average military member is a moderate when it comes to politics and social views. We aren’t pegged against the right wall of intolerance nor the left wall of libertarianism. Our country seems to be heading toward a polarization between the left and right while the majority of our country are moderates. The last two columns of mine have brought home the fact that the real active advocates of politics are the far right and far-left. I think we probably need a strong third-party; maybe a third party called “The Moderate Party.”

In my last newsletter, I predicted that by August 2006 gasoline prices would hit $3.00/gallon. I was off by a year. I was surprised as everyone else about the impact of a natural catastrophe that would be so severe as Katrina to level the entire northern Gulf coast. The economic impact on America will be felt for years. While the $3/gallon lasted only a few weeks, it has given us knowledge of what will happen when gas permanently reaches and exceeds the magic $3/gallon mark. It seems the hybrids aren’t the panacea everyone expects, but are a step in the right direction. Alternate fuels that can take us off dependency of foreign energy are something as important for our nation as maintaining a strong defense.

I will start the final book in the Pacific series prior to New Years. I don’t have a title that I am comfortable with sharing at this time. I am trying to keep the word Pacific in it. In closing, once again, my best thoughts and prayers with each of you and your families as we finish this year and may the New Year be filled with joy and prosperity for everyone. Please remember our troops overseas and, if you do nothing else, drop Scott a letter, a card, or a note though small packages are always much appreciated.

Cheers,
David E. Meadows
